Birthday disposables

I celebrated my 23rd birthday in NYC with my birthday twin Kat (IG: @bujowithkat), who also happened to be my junior year roomie and is one of my best friends (but don't tell her that haha). / On this day, I decided to bring three disposable cameras with me, with the goal of shooting enough to constitute an entire blog post without the aid of any digital photos. / This idea was inspired by Abby (laceandlilac.com), long time blog friend who visited me in Philly just two days prior to this trip. She shot like mad (on a proper film camera, not on a disposable like I did) and went through a roll of film every other block as we explored Philly -- I'm not exaggerating! / So on this trip to NYC, I took a cue from her and brought more than enough film with me -- three disposable cameras worth. It's not like I needed to be stingy with them, as I've been holding onto TEN disposable cameras for THREE YEARS. (I ended up using up exactly two disposable cameras on this trip.)

The only real plan we had for this trip was to have a birthday picnic, and the only item we planned on our menu was a shared slice of funfetti cookie cake from Schmackary's. (I also wanted to stick 23 candles in said slice of cake, but Kat said no, and anyway, I didn't know where to find 23 candles so last minute, nor did I want to ask anyone where I could.) / Unfortunately, by the time we arrived at Schmackary's, they were sold out of their cake slices already, so instead we bought an assortment of cookies. I got a bunch of funfetti cookies (my favourite flavour at Schmackary's) and one birthday cake cookie (alas, not one birthday cookie cake), because I couldn't not for the occasion. / Along the way, we also got take-out from Baohaus (pork belly baos for me), 鲜芋仙 (taro ball tofu pudding), and Boba Guys.

With our feast gathered up, we finally settled down on a shady patch in Washington Square Park and dug in. The mosquitoes also had a feast, taking four bites out of me.

More guests at our picnic! Honestly, I'm amazed this pigeon showed up so well on film, considering my lack of skill shooting disposable film and the likely possibility of my film being expired hahh...

After such a feast, we were in desperate need to walk it off.

Lumbering the streets of NYC, we came upon a flea market.

Our favourite vendor was Pigeon Be Pigeon. Check out his shop at pigeonbepigeon.com!

Wow, look at that stunning photography! Basically all my indoor disposables were unsalvageable. I didn't think I needed flash in these photos because the interiors actually seemed quite bright in real life, but apparently not. / Anywho, the moments lost in the depths of my disposables were: Housing Works Bookstore Cafe (where I found a secondhand copy of The Whisper Man by Alex North -- one of the most highly anticipated thrillers of 2019 -- four days before publication, but I had already read an eARC so I didn't need a copy, so I hid the one I found elsewhere in the bookstore for one of my NYC-based bookstagram friends to snatch up later in the day... and she did!), Sézane, Everlane, Mejuri.

Our celebrations wound down at Urban Backyard. Miraculously, the outdoor seating was free, which means that I didn't lose as many photos as I would have if we were seated inside.

We made ourselves at home, sipping on yuzuade -- lavender flavoured for me, mint flavoured for Kat.

Peep the tote I was carrying around all day. I'm obsessed.
