ONE // How to pack: the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 guide

In a month I’ll be flying back to the States, but for those of you who are leaving for vacation a little earlier, here’s a packing guide. Meanwhile, I’ll be trying to survive wanderlust while stuck in one place. Something you can do no matter where you are is have a picnic. Don’t forget to pack a light lunch, some lemonade, and every occasion calls for champagne. Most importantly, don’t forget the ice-cream. You can make your own even without an ice-cream machine, and if you’re in LA, you should check out Salt & Straw. Other fun summer links are how to have the absolute best road trip ever, quick summer makeup, MuMu beach club, and summer blog post ideas. And I want pink hair.

TWO // Break free

This is “a short film about gender roles, trans, and what it’s like to have an identity that deviates from the status quo” written, produced, and starring Ruby Rose. Break free from the expectations of society and be you. Forget about being likeable. You’re wasting your likeable on the wrong people. People will try to put a label on you, but you are much more. In Vogue’s July issue, Cara Delevigne opens up about her childhood, love life, and why modeling just isn’t enough. In Elle Australia’s July issue, or rather, on Elle Australia’s July issue is Nicole Warne of Gary Pepper. “This marks the first time a digital influencer has appeared on the cover of a major Australian fashion magazine.”

THREE // Mary

“Happy Father’s Day to the best mom I know.” Claire made this video for her mother, Mary. You might want to grab a tissue box. I’m so fortunate to have two loving parents, but I know that the same cannot be said for everyone, and days like Father’s Day or Mother’s Day can be an unpleasant reminder of that. In that case, you might find comfort in this article about finding heart. Let’s lighten the mood a bit and move onto this fun I love you Dad experiment, in which people tell their dad’s they love them and record their reaction; it’s not every day a dad hears those words. For more smiles and laughs, check out these comedians on fatherhood. And finally, a note from a father about the parent he aspires to be.

Did you catch my Father’s Day post from last week?

How to take a productive blogging hiatus - The Blog Market

FOUR // How to take a productive blogging hiatus

For some people, bloggers included, summer means taking a break from the computer; it means going out, traveling, and living life. Everyone needs to disconnect a little. I’ve actually posted more this month of summer than any other month yet, but hopefully your summer has seen more adventures. Even though you’re away from your computer, that doesn’t mean blogging has to come to a full stop for you. You can grow your blog offline and schedule social media, or you can simply write less. That last tip is also helpful if you just don’t like writing in general but still want to blog.

FIVE // Taylor Swift – We Are Never Ever Getting Bad Blood (Mashup) by Nigel Brian Carpio

I don’t often listen to Taylor Swift and don’t particularly love or hate her music, but I must admit that her songs are hella catchy (and also her talent is undeniable). Put two of her songs together… I can’t get it out of my head. This mashup has seen the news and was posted on YouTube but taken down due to copyright issues. I get that the mashup was using her songs, but the person who made it was also creating something of his own, so I think it kinda sucks that he’s getting copyright strikes. Just in case anything else is taken down, here are two other places he’s uploaded his mashup: (x) (x). In other Taylor Swift mashup news, if you haven’t heard Blank Space x Style, you should definitely check it out.

ONE // Enjoying the in-between

Summer is the best season to lose track of time. It’s the season of perpetual weekends. Who cares what day it is? I’m surprised I even realized that today was Friday. When you’re given this much time and freedom, you’re going to want to use it. So many places to be, people to meet, projects to start. So much planning to do… Perhaps your excitement begins to wane there. The truth of the matter is that you don’t have to be excited to stay committed. But why not enjoy this moment? After all, you’re here.

TWO // 24 hours in Istanbul

It’s finally summer, when wanderlust is at its peak. Some of us are off chasing adventures, and some of us (me) are living life vicariously through the Internet. JacksGap‘s 24 Hours In… vlog series will take you away, and on his blog you can see all the behind the scenes action. His camera is rad. Another 24 hour adventure to check out is Ghost Parties‘ in Iceland, which was actually a stopover on her way to NYC–for no extra cost. Speaking of bargains, this man has figured out how to fly for free. There are still a few months left before summer break is over so it’s not too late to look for ways to get abroad.

How creating a daily schedule helps me get more done - Allyssa Barnes

THREE // How creating a daily schedule helps me get more done

It’s great to be a dreamer and all–it really is a beautiful thing–but you gotta wake up and get sh*t done. First of all, make sure that what you’re pursuing is your dream and not anyone else’s. It’s okay if your dream doesn’t look the same as the people you’re inspired by. Second, you have to realize that following your dreams is nothing but work. And finally it’s time to get out of bed. Try these 8 tricks to make yourself wake up earlier. Working without a professor or classmates to keep you accountable can be difficult. Nevertheless, give everything you’re capable of giving. Be confident. You can do it.

Why you should read as often as you blog - The Blog Market

FOUR // Why you should read as often as you blog

The last Friday Favorites I posted was in January. I’ve been spending the last few days catching up on all 700+ blog posts I missed from the hectic last month of school and now I’m finally feeling inspired again. The flow of ideas is back and I couldn’t be more excited! You may have noticed that I’ve been feeling burnt out, in regards to blogging; the 52 project has become my crutch and I haven’t been posting much else. How can I inspire you if I can’t inspire myself first? Reading other blogs stimulates my creativity and reconnects me to the blogosphere. There are so many things I want to do!

S’mores donuts - The Merry Thought

FIVE // S’mores donuts

Are you a Krispy Kreme or Dunkin’ Donuts fan? I’m Krispy Kreme all the wayyy. Exactly a week ago was National Donut Day but there’s no such thing as too many donuts, so here are some more. They’re the perfect way to upgrade a plain ol’ glazed donut into a gourmet masterpiece. If you’re craving something a little more savory, try these cheddar donuts. If you find yourself in LA (I will!), here’s the ultimate LA guide to donuts. Had enough? No such thing. Try these donut crafts.

Everything LOVE-ly

February 12, 2015

ONE // Rose petal infused honey

Everyone knows the way to my heart is through my stomach. A festive pizza is always a good idea. Or perhaps start with something a little more refined like this rose petal infused honey, avocado toast egg-in-a-hole, or Valentine’s Day treat box, which would also make a great gift. But who are we kidding? I’m eating this all myself! In fact, I’ll also be indulging in this slutty brownie sundae. Other cute desserts are London cheesecake, almond cake, and confetti hearts bubble gum cake. Valentine’s Day is not complete without red velvet recipes: pancakes with honeyed whipped cream cheese and layer cake with cream cheese frosting. Or change it up with raspberries: salted chocolate raspberry stout doughnuts and chocolate cupcakes with creamy raspberry frosting. If you have time, try these rainbow heart cookies. Or just take a swig of alcohol: champagne punch, cocktails, and grapefruit mojitos.

Be The Best Valentine - The College Prepster

TWO // Be the best Valentine

I’ve never had a boyfriend before, but I’ve never been bothered by Valentine’s Day. I’m really excited for February 15 though; I can’t resist chocolates on sale. As a single person, I’ve always regarded Valentine’s Day as a time for me to be selfish, indulge in what I want, and treat myself. But this time I challenge you (and myself) to not limit Valentine’s Day to romantic love. Give all the lovely people in your life some appreciation. Show your friends you love them. Love yourself. Just because you don’t have a date doesn’t mean you can’t dress yourself up! Make a cute arrow and heart hair pin. Go casual during the day and formal at night. Go for a soft ensemble with a sweet and simple look or go bold lipped. Make them kiss proof just in case. You never know what the day might bring! Or just tune out, relax, and take a bath with Lush’s Valentine’s Day collection, because as Sylvia Plath says, “There must be quite a few things that a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them.”

Printable Valentine Pary Bags - Oh Happy Day

THREE // Printable Valentine party bags

For those of you unlucky enough to have the obligation to give your significant other a present, here are some helpful gift guides to make your life a little easier: for her, for him, and most importantly, for yourself. To get you started, here are some freebies: printable card 1, printable card 2, printable wall letters, and treat box labels. Personally, I think DIY gifts are the best, especially for a sentimental holiday like Valentine’s Day: you’re dynamite, branch tree, photo banner, mini-zine, flip book, lightbulb, typographic favor bags, tic-tac-toe, and more and more! Don’t underestimate the power of the traditional sweethearts candies (graham cracker conversation hearts, balloons, glitter heart candy boxes, leather gift tags), handwritten note (love note wall art, message in a bottle), or flowers (tips for buying flowers, paper flower pop up box, note wrapped flowers, crepe paper tulip).

10 Favorite Pins - Design Love Fest

FOUR // Your life is a hot date. Show up. (img src: Design Love Fest’s 10 favorite pins right now)

“I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning.” -J.B. Priestley. Whatever you do, don’t wallow in self pity. Today is not the day! Fall in love with everyone, fall in love with life. Wake up every morning ready to seize the day. Find beauty in the ordinary as well as the extraordinary. Read a cute comic. Skip 50 Shades of Grey. Go on a boat ride. Go do something. Find the lost art of free time. You have more than you think. Live simply. Waste note, want not. Don’t forget your passion projects.

Create a Cozy Date Night - The Fresh Exchange

FIVE // Create a cozy date night

Much like Christmas, Valentine’s Day isn’t about giving and getting gifts but about spending time with the people you love most. Have a cozy date night at home without any distractions and spend some quality time together. Doesn’t that sound nice? Now I’m wondering, why wait until Valentine’s Day? Why not have date nights all throughout the year? 1000 Thread’s 52 dates project last year inspired me to do my own 52 project this year, so if you have a date, definitely give this a shot! You don’t have to have a whole soiree, but if that’s what you want, that can be a lot of fun too! It’d be a great excuse to pull out some confetti poppers. Or is a soiree too sophisticated for confetti? Nah. Whether for a large group or just for yourself and significant other, change things up with this modern romantic Valentine’s Day table or inspire yourself with this more traditional pink and gold brunch moodboard.

PS: Throwback to this time last year.

ONE // Winter is back, my dear

Whenever it’s winter, I’m always wishing that it’s summer. Whenever it’s summer, I’m always wishing that it’s winter. Right now it’s winter, and with the unrelenting wind chill, it’s difficult for me to cherish this weather, even though I know that I’ll be wishing for it when summer comes around. So let’s forget about the frostbite and remember the magic. Get cozy in stripes, neutrals, and scarves, flaunt it in cashmere and silk, get crafty by turning an old book into a new purse, and escape to Burberry backstage.

How I got my start in the creative industry - The Veda House

TWO // How I got my start in the creative industry

It takes courage to stray from the conventional career path into the creative industry. If that’s what you want to do, know that it’s possible, but don’t expect it to be easy. It’ll be hard work, but you can do it. There is no better time to start than now. Even high school isn’t too early (check out this interior design installation)! Find and embrace your design style, create a moodboard, play with cool gadgets, utilize Bloglovin’, come up with original content, vary your content, and break out of your creative drought. Don’t be deterred by these myths, and know that it’s okay to earn money from blogging.

Takoyaki recipe - Eat Your Teacup

THREE // Takoyaki recipe

Part two of my three part winter break was spent in Japan. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to bring food carts back with me to the States, but did you know that you can make your own takoyaki with a Dutch pancake maker (or really any pan with spherical shapes)? What that means to me is that I can make takoyaki from my dorm room! I mean, I probably shouldn’t, but I could. Some other recipes on my radar are homemade butterbeer, wild mushroom and gruyère egg baskets, huggie bear biscuits, coconut macaroons, almond salted caramels, and vanilla cake with vanilla frosting and marzipan succulent.

On changing dreams - A Beautiful Mess

FOUR // On changing dreams

It’s a new year and the only thing constant is change. Have you written out your resolutions or are you set on having the worst year ever? Well, I guess that’s not totally fair. You don’t have to have resolutions to have a good year, but it doesn’t hurt to get a little organized with a desktop calendar. I myself have set 2015 blogging goals and 2015 personal mantras. Hopefully your holiday break in Brighton or the Bahamas or Iceland or wherever has gotten you refreshed, re-energized, and ready to go. To get us started on the right foot, here are six productivity tips for working at your desk.

One less stranger - SF Girl By Bay

FIVE // One less stranger

If you want to walk in the footsteps of HONY, this is your chance. Are there people you always see but never talk to? This is your chance. As a shy introvert, I know that this is easier said than done, but all it takes is a “hello!” Spread the love. Share the happiness. Do a random act of kindness. You don’t have to do something as extravagant as this hairstylist did. It can be something as simple as tipping a little more than you need to. Or even just listening. Because everyone has a story to tell.

Everything Christmas

December 23, 2014

ONE // Christmas survival packs

Holidays should be great right? You finally get to reunite with family you haven’t seen for awhile, but sometimes the holidays can bring out the worst in us so here’s a little survival pack. Before you go, learn to pack without wrinkles, and once you arrive, figure out jetlag. Your family may drive you crazy and even you might drive yourself crazy trying to make everything perfect for the holidays, but focus on the merry spirit and relish your holiday traditions. Remember: mistakes make great stories.

Printable Recipe Cards - Coco and Mingo

TWO // Printable recipe cards

Food is definitely what I look most forward to when I’m home for the holidays. It’s going to be difficult trying to fight holiday food temptations if not impossible. I’ve been on baking withdrawal thanks to the lack of kitchens in college, so now that I’m back, I’m planning to have a day of festive baking.

DIY: make holiday pies awesome, golden glitter star cake toppers, cake and beverage stencil

Uncategorized: pine simple syrup, coffee and maple spiced nuts, peppermint bark, more

Hot chocolate: vegan peppermint hot chocolate, red wine hot chocolate, white Christmas cocoa, nutella hot chocolate, chocolate orange hot chocolate, boozy pumpkin white hot chocolate, creamy hot chocolate, gingerbread hot chocolate (serve in style with a charming hot cocoa stand)

Gingerbread: cinnamon ginger buns, maple glazed gingerbread scones, deep dark gingerbread waffles

Cranberries: cranberry brie tartlets, orange bourbon cranberry sauce, cranberry pie with pecan crumble

Eggnog: homemade eggnog v1 v2, eggnog french toast v1 v2 v3, eggnog marshmallows

Drinks: strawberry pomegranate sangria, sparkling cider, apple pie cocktail, mint merrymaker cocktail

Five steps to a perfect holiday garland - Wit and Delight

THREE // Five steps to a perfect holiday garland

Transform your space with greenery. It’s all about garlands (sequin letter, jingle chime, wood veneer chain, holiday, more), wreaths (pipe, simple, unique), and trees (paper, plywood, skirt)! After your Christmas tree is up, decorate it with ornaments (paper ball v1 v2, dried citrus, watercolor, felt pinecone owl). If you’re still lacking in greenery, try these mistletoe balloons. Other fun things to decorate the house with are tin punched votive candles, birch wood tea light holders, woven stockings, and giant snowflake light-up marquees. If you only have a small space available, keep this in mind. Now that your house is ready, it’s time to get your party on! Do you want it to be more modern or more of a whimsical wonderland? No matter the case, stay effortless–don’t let the holidays smother you!

Subtle holiday shimmer - Cupcakes and Cashmere

FOUR // Subtle holiday shimmer

It’s going to be the first time in awhile my relatives will see me, so I want to look my best! In the cold weather, it’s very difficult to find motivation to look nice when all you want to do is curl up in bed all day with a thick blanket wrapped around you in your PJs. Here are some tricks to looking and feeling fairly awesome even though it’s freezing. The only things I don’t mind changing into are ugly but cozy Christmas sweaters. If you’re more fashion forward, here is how you can style Christmas knitwear. Give your eyes a holiday sparkle and see how you can deal with these holiday beauty problems.

Handmade holiday gift wrap party - Coco Kelley

FIVE // Handmade holiday gift wrap party

If anybody would be so kind as to send me a gift… I want this for Christmas!! REALLY BADLY!!! I guess you could get me a dream car or something handmade or something from Boden or something to do with photography, but all I really want is this this THIS! If you get me that, don’t even worry about wrapping it. On the other hand, if you don’t, your wrapping better be impressive like this or this or this or this or this or this. Haha jk, but those wrappings are pretty cool. If you’re still trying to find a present for someone, check out these five quick and easy gift giving ideas using dōTERRA essential oils.

I haven’t had any time to prepare for the holidays, so now it’s time to get down to business. Here’s a roundup of Christmas links I’ve been hoarding over the past month, and now I finally have time to get a start on them. I’m just a bit of a procrastinator. But it’s never too late for Christmas!

Christmas spirit

December 14, 2014

Is it Christmas yet? I haven’t had a chance to properly deck myself (or my room) out with Christmas swag yet, because I’ve been swamped with end-of-semester projects and assessments (though I have been doing quite a bit of online shopping). Tomorrow I’ll be taking my first final exam, and on Thursday I’ll be taking my last one. In between, I’ll be taking a little study break (remember my productivity tips?) with Heather at the Christmas Village. Until then, enjoy these Christmas music videos!

ONE // Jingle Bells – Minions

I first saw this in theaters while I was waiting for Interstellar to begin. The minions (and the fluffy unicorn) are one of my favorite parts of Despicable Me. I did not like Despicable Me 2, but I’m really excited for Minions. Not so excited for Penguins of Madagascar. And I still need to watch Big Hero 6.

TWO // Shake Up Christmas – Train

Train and Matt & Kim are my go-to artists when I need a little pick-me-up. I love the energy in this music video, and the snow globe motif is cute. I miss songs like this that tell stories, as opposed to songs that try to be “deep” with emotion or songs that repeat the same thing over and over.

THREE // Christmas Time Is Here – Daniela Andrade

I first discovered this YouTube musician through Mariell’s blog Hjartesmil. Daniela Andrade has such a unique and calming voice, and her puppy Dina is so adorable! If you want to explore her channel, check out her covers of La Vie En Rose and Latch. Her cover of Falling Slowly was mentioned on HONY!

FOUR // Baby It’s Cold Outside – Idina Menzel and Michael Bublé

Ever since I saw Idina Menzel perform in the Broadway Musical Wicked, I’ve always been in awe of her ridiculous talent, and now she’s gained so much popularity from Frozen. Anyways, I love this music video because it reminds me of love in the pure form of an innocent childhood crush.

FIVE // That’s Christmas To Me – Pentatonix

This is a beautiful music video. There’s nothing like Christmas to bring out the sentimental side of us! In the midst of the magic of the holiday season, try to remember the true reason we’re having these celebrations. It’s not just about getting gifts, although that’s always a plus. What’s Christmas to you?
