Brunch at Audrey’s 2.0

May 20, 2016

So… how do you like the new look?

I spend a lot of time working on my blog, but my blog wasn’t at a level I felt comfortable to share, like on a resume. But since I do spend so much time working on my blog, I wanted to be able to show something of it, as running a blog is certainly relevant to me as a computer science major looking to enter the tech industry.

I think Brunch at Audrey’s does a good job at being relatable. I write pretty informally, and it’s not like I’m being invited to private events or being sent products or going on expensive shopping sprees. I’m a college student for goodness sake. What I want to do now is maintain that element of relatability but also bring in a greater sense of professionalism.

Since I’ve already been blogging for almost three years, I was finally convinced that blogging wasn’t just a phase, convinced that it was something that would be worthwhile to invest money in. I didn’t come to this decision lightly. I’m quite frugal with how I spend my money, and spending money on virtual things freaks me out, and even online shopping does too, to a certain extent. But in the past three years, I’ve blogged without spending a penny, starting off at Tumblr then migrating over to Blogspot, both of which are free, so I think it’s finally time.

Getting a domain was the first step. I figured, if I’m getting a domain, I should consider maybe switching platforms, for instance to Squarespace that offers a free custom domain with annual purchase or to WordPress.org with Bluehost that offers a custom domain in their package as well. Either option seems to be a more professional platform than Blogspot.

Initially I was leaning toward Squarespace. They do a great job advertising with YouTubers and podcasters, and I was not immune. I’ve seen beautiful, minimal, simple websites and blogs created with Squarespace. I follow some of them too. I heard so much about their awesome user-friendly drag-and-drop function. But some of my computer science friends made me consider the fact that maybe the drag-and-drop function isn’t the most ideal, that their templates may be restrictive, that perhaps Squarespace isn’t as intuitive or customisable as it might seem, especially for people who might want to do more coding. A self-hosted website would allow for more freedom. So I decided to go with WordPress.org, as I’d like my blog to not only help me grow creatively but also to serve as a technical exercise.

Another reason I chose Wordpress.org was because it would give me an excuse to use the WordPress theme that I had already bought. I bought this Station Seven WordPress theme last June when I saw it on sale at Creative Market for 50% off even though at that point I was still on Blogspot and had no intention of migrating over. But you never know. I fell in love with how the minimal design allowed the focus to be on the content and how it displayed photography so well.

In the past few weeks I’ve seen two blogs I follow revamped and given a makeover with similar Station Seven WordPress themes and on one hand I was like “wow this is so beautiful, I am so excited for you,” but on the other hand I was also like “ah crap, what if my readers also follow them and think that I’m just a copy cat.” I swear I’m not! I got the theme almost a year ago! I’ve wanted to give Brunch at Audrey’s an update for awhile now, but have been too busy with school and so planned to hold off until summer break. It was so hard to wait until now to revamp and relaunch the blog, especially during finals week when all I wanted was to productively procrastinate by working on it.

On Tuesday I signed up for Bluehost, blew $250 for three years of their hosting service, installed WordPress, installed the premium WordPress theme, formatted it the way I wanted it to look, installed Disqus, exported Blogspot, imported it to WordPress, copied over information for my About page, and set up my Contact page. On Wednesday I organized the footer widgets, chose posts for the featured slider on the home page, and updated my latest blog posts to fit the new theme by reuploading photos, repositioning cuts, and retargeting hyperlinks. On Thursday I worked on my Work with Me page and drafted a few blog posts. And just a few minutes ago I launched this blog, reconfigured my Bloglovin’ feed, redirected my Blogspot, and published this post. I still have 100+ old posts to update, but I think I’m off to a good start.

Do you have any plans to update your blog? Questions about how I did it for mine? Feel free to comment below!

tl;dr– I’ve migrated over from Blogspot to WordPress.org and got my own domain!

Boxes, sales, break – 20/52 :)

May 16, 2016

I’ve survived another school year! It’s been a crazy weekend of finalizing projects, maneuvering around families seeing their kids for graduation, and packing up. I finally saw the apartment that my friend Victoria and I are staying in this summer that we rented from her friends. It was a MESS. Lint and hair and god knows what else everywhere. So gross. After moving all our boxes into the apartment, we found a box of Clorox and immediately started wiping everything down, starting from our room that we’re sharing for the next week that we’ve dubbed our safe haven, then moved onto the living room, then the dining room, including the table and chairs and the bottoms of them, and then we decided to brave the bathroom because we’re gonna need to use that, but we just barely started wiping it down when we realized that we had just used up the whole box of Clorox. At that point we were totally exhausted and were at a loss as to what to do next. Victoria jokingly said, what if we walked back to campus and showered there and used their free wifi? Hahaha. But then it actually wasn’t such a bad idea. So we did that. I’m so glad that I’m not dealing with this on my own!

United by Blue – warehouse sale!

May 14, 2016

womens tenton cuff shirt ($42 $20) – mens pattern pocket shirt ($42 $4) – womens tee ($36 $4) (print)
Over spring break, I visited ten coffee shops in seven days, and one of them was United by Blue, a coffee house and clothier. On Wednesday night (5/11) as I was recovering from my Discrete Math final and forcing myself to make progress with my Data Structures project, I received an email from United by Blue announcing their biggest sale of the year, their warehouse sale! I immediately texted my cafe-loving, #aesthetic-loving friends, and we made plans for a shopping trip on May 13, the first day of the sale (as everything would be due for us May 13 at noon so we’d be free the rest of the day, we’d be too busy on May 14 with Commencement, and we’d be moving out of our dorms on May 15).

The store was pretty chaotic and there were boxes and clothes everywhere, but I scored the three tops pictured above. I’m really proud of how much money I saved (though one could argue (my parents would probably argue) that I’d save the most money if I didn’t buy anything at all…). The original prices are quite expensive and admittedly, I probably wouldn’t by anything there full price with my college student budget, but it’s for a good cause. United by Blue promises that for every product sold, United by Blue removes one pound of trash from our world’s oceans and waterways.

Drive Thru Boba

May 11, 2016

Just in case you didn’t catch it the first million times I mentioned it in my blog posts, I love bubble tea. So much. When I’m on break and with my family is the prime time to try out different shops, because my parents can drive me around everywhere. Summer break was no exception. At the end of it, my dad asked me what my favourite bubble tea shop was, and I couldn’t say. I just drink and enjoy it man, let me live. But my dad, aghast, said, “I took you to all these places and you don’t even know which one is your favourite?!” So over winter break, I made sure to keep track of all my bubble tea expeditions.

Ramen, flowers, concerts – 19/52

May 9, 2016

It’s been a month since I’ve purged myself of social media and it’s been great! I have no plans to get on Facebook anytime soon, though I do have to say that I miss the Events feature. I don’t have plans to get back on Instagram either. I kept thinking about whether or not I wanted to stop using Tumblr, but it’s the one social media site I “know” how to use, and I appreciate all the #relatable text posts, so I’m going to keep the Tumblr I reblog things on and then leave my photography Tumblr as an inactive archive. I could honestly live without Twitter, but it seems like the go-to social media platform for people in the tech industry, whether that’s programming or blogging or something else, so as a computer science major, imma keep Twitter at least for now. As for Pinterest… I’ve reactivated it! Kat and I have been making plans for our apartment so…

Snow Lake

May 4, 2016

When I was little, my parents would take me and my brothers to national parks all the time. We collected National Park Passport Stamps and everything. But I never really got what was so great about it. Okay Dad I get it, another cool tree. Okay Mom I get it, another cool mountain. Yup, they’re really big. Can I go home now? I’m so hungry. I’m so tired. I’m so bored. Wow this path goes on forever.

But then I moved from Los Angeles (which isn’t even particularly lush) to Beijing, and I realized that I had taken all that fresh air and greenery for granted. Each time I came back to the States for the summer, I’d get out of the airport and immediately smell green (after I got past the smokers). I didn’t know I could smell colour, but I did.
