Seven Sisters swimvitational // 03×52

January 20, 2015

On MLK Day, Americans across the country come together for a day of service, picking up the baton handed to us by past generations and carrying forward their efforts. As one people, we show that when ordinary citizens come together to participate in the democracy we love, justice will not be denied. So make the commitment to serve your community throughout the year — and make MLK Day a day on, not a day off. [source] But you cannot believe how much I am in need of a day off! (Okay my struggle is incomparable to the social [in]justice in the world, but allow me this one transition sentence?)

I thought that having a day off on the first day back from winter break was ridiculous. Can’t the holiday be stuck somewhere in the middle of winter break and spring break? But during the last week of 2014 I was in Taipei to visit relatives, during the first week of 2015 I was in Osaka for vacation, during the second week of 2015 I was in Florida for a training trip, and over the weekend I was in Massachusetts for a swim meet, so right now I need this little break to lie in bed and chill (and edit pictures).

The swim team took a road trip up to Massachusetts for the 7 Sisters swimvitational hosted by Mount Holyoke. After staying in condos by the beach for a week in the sunny state of Florida, the Comfort Inn by the nowhere in the snowy state of Massachusetts was a little lackluster. On Friday and Saturday I was walking around the inn trying to spy something photograph-worthy but was coming up with nothing.

The inn was dingy with bad lighting and small rooms. The bathrooms reeked of chlorine, which is what you get when you squish four swimmers into a three-person room with two beds. Breakfast was served on plastic plates with plastic utensils, and really, how many different pictures of bagels could I get?

I’m making it sound worse than it was, but I was not feeling very optimistic about this week’s 52 project, and I’m only three weeks in! But as Jack London says, “You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a camera club.” You need to create it. You need to be your own inspiration.

This 52 project is a challenge, and with every challenge you overcome, you grow. So I began thinking of alternatives. I knew that the possibility of getting nice photographs in the inn would be shabby, so that went off the list. There was also the problem of sharing a room with three swimmers who were resting for a swim meet, as I should have been. If it weren’t for this project, I would have been sleeping like a baby right up until it was time to board the bus for the meet, but anything for the blog, right?

I take a step back and return to my goal of maintaining perspective because adventure is out there. Remember the magic of mornings? Remember the magic of snow? Remember how exciting it was to sneak out when it was dark? Actually that last one I’ve never experienced; I was am the most angelic child ever. Well, this was my chance! To sneak out, to wake up with the world, to see the sun peek over the horizon, to see the snow sparkle in reply, to get some kickass pictures.

Sometimes you need to take a step back, and sometimes you need to take a step forward. From a distance, the town was ordinary with suburban houses spattered along the road and convenience stores guiding the way. I could imagine a small town girl sitting wistfully on her windowsill just wishing for something to happen, anything to happen in this nondescript place.

There was a limit to how far I could wander because I didn’t want to get lost, which was terrifyingly plausible due to my lack of sense of direction, so I stuck to one direction along one long street. And it was rejuvenating. The houses slept under a coat of snow. The forests of trees hid secrets between their leaves. Each pop of color that sprouted from the ground was a miracle in the form of beautifully arranged petals. The ombre sky faded into unknown space. And I was there to capture it.

Be present, because it’s always the little things, and if you’re not there to see it, you’ll miss them.

Fun fact: Did you know that Brunch at Audrey’s was originally called Miss Average? That’s why the description in my sidebar says, “My life is pretty average, but it’s the little things that count, right?” There is beauty in averageness (seriously, Google it). I’ve kept the description despite changing my blog name, because there is some averageness to brunch: it’s the average of breakfast and lunch.

ONE // Winter is back, my dear

Whenever it’s winter, I’m always wishing that it’s summer. Whenever it’s summer, I’m always wishing that it’s winter. Right now it’s winter, and with the unrelenting wind chill, it’s difficult for me to cherish this weather, even though I know that I’ll be wishing for it when summer comes around. So let’s forget about the frostbite and remember the magic. Get cozy in stripes, neutrals, and scarves, flaunt it in cashmere and silk, get crafty by turning an old book into a new purse, and escape to Burberry backstage.

How I got my start in the creative industry - The Veda House

TWO // How I got my start in the creative industry

It takes courage to stray from the conventional career path into the creative industry. If that’s what you want to do, know that it’s possible, but don’t expect it to be easy. It’ll be hard work, but you can do it. There is no better time to start than now. Even high school isn’t too early (check out this interior design installation)! Find and embrace your design style, create a moodboard, play with cool gadgets, utilize Bloglovin’, come up with original content, vary your content, and break out of your creative drought. Don’t be deterred by these myths, and know that it’s okay to earn money from blogging.

Takoyaki recipe - Eat Your Teacup

THREE // Takoyaki recipe

Part two of my three part winter break was spent in Japan. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to bring food carts back with me to the States, but did you know that you can make your own takoyaki with a Dutch pancake maker (or really any pan with spherical shapes)? What that means to me is that I can make takoyaki from my dorm room! I mean, I probably shouldn’t, but I could. Some other recipes on my radar are homemade butterbeer, wild mushroom and gruyère egg baskets, huggie bear biscuits, coconut macaroons, almond salted caramels, and vanilla cake with vanilla frosting and marzipan succulent.

On changing dreams - A Beautiful Mess

FOUR // On changing dreams

It’s a new year and the only thing constant is change. Have you written out your resolutions or are you set on having the worst year ever? Well, I guess that’s not totally fair. You don’t have to have resolutions to have a good year, but it doesn’t hurt to get a little organized with a desktop calendar. I myself have set 2015 blogging goals and 2015 personal mantras. Hopefully your holiday break in Brighton or the Bahamas or Iceland or wherever has gotten you refreshed, re-energized, and ready to go. To get us started on the right foot, here are six productivity tips for working at your desk.

One less stranger - SF Girl By Bay

FIVE // One less stranger

If you want to walk in the footsteps of HONY, this is your chance. Are there people you always see but never talk to? This is your chance. As a shy introvert, I know that this is easier said than done, but all it takes is a “hello!” Spread the love. Share the happiness. Do a random act of kindness. You don’t have to do something as extravagant as this hairstylist did. It can be something as simple as tipping a little more than you need to. Or even just listening. Because everyone has a story to tell.

How has your week been?

Winter break training trip // 02×52

January 12, 2015

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen that I’ve spent my second week of the new year in Florida for my swim team’s winter training trip! Even though it looks like fun and games, that’s not the whole story. I was unable to capture the more grueling parts of the trip because I was too busy working my butt whole body off to hold a camera. We have water practice 9AM-11AM, dryland for half an hour after that, a long break, and another water practice 5PM-7PM. By then I’m totally exhausted, but we need to cook dinner ourselves, so I stay up for that and then crash at around 10PM. I don’t even have enough energy to procrastinate! I’m really glad that I’m taking on this 52 project, because otherwise, I really don’t think I would be doing anything else right now but eat, sleep, and swim.

The first thing I do is kick off the ace bandage I have wrapped around my poor ankle (so much for evening out my weird foot tan in Florida), and the next thing I do is pull out my iPad, check Bakery Story, Instagram, the works. I leave a book by my bedside to inspire myself to start the day off with a little reading, but so far it has been but a prop. (I have every intention to read, but this early in the morning it’s too dark to decipher the characters, so really, it’s not my fault hehe.)

The last thing I want to do is get out of bed (this seems to be the trend). But I got a blog to run, so what can I do? 😛 After my first few attempts to photograph from the comfort of my bed, I forced myself up to draw the curtains back, as I was coming up with nothing but pictures of blackness. (I was seriously considering just using those pictures and writing something existential about darkness/emptiness.)

Everything started glowing in the morning light. At the risk of sounding like a nerd, good lighting is everything and I am obsessed with it. I have never functioned early enough with my brain, much less my camera, to catch lighting like this. I wonder what else I have missed. Wouldn’t it be fun to do a photo an hour project to catch all the different lights? But let’s not get too ahead of ourselves yet.

The sun yawns, stretching its rays of light. The world is just starting to wake up, but it hasn’t yet. We’re caught in a limbo, an in-between where time seems to slow down until it stops altogether. Everything is peaceful. Everything is quiet. Well, not quite. Everything is distant. And we leisurely attune ourselves with a cup of coffee, a plate of bagels, a bowl of oatmeal, a sprinkle of blueberries. There’s nothing to worry about at the moment. The future is waiting, but for now we can enjoy the present.

And then I realize: Mornings are just as beautiful, just as magical as snow. To quote Gilmore Girls:

When I was five, I had a really bad ear infection and I had been home in bed for a week and I was very sad. So I wished really hard that something wonderful would happen to me. And I woke up the next morning and it had snowed. And I was sure that some fairy godmother had done it just for me. It was my little present. Of course, many years later, I realized that logically, the snow was not there for me personally. But, still, when it snows, something inside me says, “Hey that’s your present.” I don’t think it’ll ever change.

Not everyone gets snow all the time, but you know what? Mornings happen every day 🙂

And the possibilities await.

One of my 2015 blogging goals is to be more consistent, and my first step towards achieving that is with a weekly blogging project that will (hopefully) continue throughout the year: a 52-week project.

Personal mantras for 2015, inspired by Jennypurr

January 3, 2015

I feel like I start every blog post apologizing for my absence, and, well, today is no different haha. My winter break has been filled with food, shopping, and craptastic Internet connection. I know that I have a bunch of comments, Tumblr messages, and emails to reply to, so please bear with me and don’t feel ignored! Soon you’ll be hearing about my winter break in three parts. Anyways, let’s get on with it…

It’s never too late (!!!) to get started with your New Year’s resolution. As the wise Karen Lamb says, “a year from now you may wish you had started today,” so don’t wait until the next beginning. Start now.

I was going to do a whole 2015 A-Z resolution/goal/bucket list like I’ve done before, but similar to my attempt at 100 Happy Days, big lists just don’t work for me. I got as far as: create a capsule wardrobe, attend a dōTERRA conference, log expenses, experience the city’s First Fridays, learn how to use Lightroom, get dressed in the mornings, start a postcard collection, stop touching your face.

I’ve seen the idea of one-word themes floating around the Internet, but this extreme doesn’t quite work for me either. There are so many things I want to change, to be–how can I choose just one word to encompass it all? And so I found the great in-between of personal mantras from Jen of Jennypurr.

ADVENTURE // Sometimes I want to be that enigmatic girl who loses herself in hidden cafes and musty bookstores, and other times I want to be that intrepid explorer who climbs mountains and goes skydiving. This year, after reading one hundred too many To Adventure blog posts and watching two thousand too many Mr. Ben Brown vlogs (as well as scrolling through alexstrohl, erickimberlin, fursty, ioegreer, jontaylorsweet, ravivora, stephenalkire on Instagram), I’ve decided that while I might not be climbing mountains or skydiving, this is the year to seize the day, to live life, to enjoy all that it all has to offer, and to get my butt out of bed. Do something physical. Do something meaningful. Adrenaline rushing, endorphin pumping. Get in tune. Explore. Discover. Think of all the photo ops. Haha jk (kinda)

PASSION // What I fear most in life is not finding my passion. Especially as a college student, a time during which I must declare a major and start setting my career path, the prospect of the future is petrifying, and the prospect of the future without a passion is utterly horrifying. I want something to look forward to. I want to go to sleep dreaming about something and to wake up pursuing it. I want to talk about something with light in my eyes. People say to choose a job you love so that you’ll never have to work a day in your life, but I think that’s bull. If you want to pursue your dreams, you need to work as hard as something-that-works-really-really-hard to get there. I want to enjoy tirelessly working towards something. But what oh what to invest all of that time and energy into?

My action plan is to live a life of positivity and to eliminate anything that threatens it. Okay, maybe not so dramatically. But my point is, I don’t want to waste time fulfilling the standards of society. I want to find my passion and pave my own path. A quote I often use to motivate myself is “you have the same amount of hours in a day as Beyoncé,” but unfortunately that isn’t true (I still love and use that quote though). Sometimes you just have to make the best of the situation you’re given, and in those cases I’ll try my darndest to maintain perspective and then be proactive enough to do something about it.

KINDNESS // This is a theme I’ve seen popping around the blogosphere. As Ian Maclaren so wonderfully puts it, “be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” This altruistic guide to zen shows that productivity isn’t everything you need to live a fulfilling life. Do you remember how it felt like when life was getting you down and absolutely nothing seemed to be going right? As an introvert, my first instinct is to seclude myself in times like these, but I encourage you and myself to reach out not only to ask for support but to give it as well. You’d be surprised how much of an impact you could make on someone’s day (or life) by simply caring. Here’s a conversational tip to get it started.

The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places. -Ernest Hemingway

There are some people in the world who are truly amazing members of society, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a few. I can never express how grateful I am to have been graced by their presence or even to have had the honor of being their friend. And I want to be someone like that.

(DO YOU GUYS HAVE THAT ONE FRIEND THAT DOESN’T THINK SHE’S ANYTHING SPECIAL BUT SHE’S BEAUTIFUL AND FUNNY AND WITTY AND EVERYTHIGN AMAZING THAT YOU COULD EVER WANT IN A PERSON BUT SHE DOESN’T SEE IT AND YOU JUST WANNA TAKE HER AND SHAKE HER AND SCREAM IN HER FACE ALL OF THE AMAZING THINGS ABOUT HER JUST SO SHE WILL APPRECIATE HOW ABSOLUTELY LOVELY SHE IS (x))

AND SOME FUN STUFF // On the vernacular of good vs. bad, us vs. them, in vs. out

Christmases around the blogosphere: Coco Kelley, Eat Love Merry, Hjartesmil, Ice Pandora, Pinch of Yum, Rainy London, The Cat, You, And Us, The Londoner, The Pink Diary, Wish Wish Wish

Achieving: your final to do before the new year, bullet journal, why smart goals aren’t so smart anymore, 90-90-1 rule, trying to keep a resolution don’t fall into this common trap

Wellness: on changing dreams, recipe for a well-lived day, one less stranger

Partay partayy partayyy: how to stock a bar cart, 15 cocktails, 10 mocktails, drink toppers

Memories: 50 questions, new year’s memory jar, hold simple evenings, the keeper of frivolous memories, how to scrapbook your memories with not-so-good-photos, memory keeping

2015 blogging goals, inspired by The Nectar Collective

December 27, 2014

Even though I haven’t been visibly active on this blog these past few months, I’ve been thinking about it a lot. It’s embarrassing how often I stalk my own blog, really. I am so proud of how far my blog has come, but there is undoubtedly so much room to grow. I’m excited for what 2015 has in store as I finish up my freshman year of college; ideas are buzzing and my mind is getting frazzled, so I’m getting it organized with this 2015 blogging goals free printable PDF created by Mel of The Nectar Collective.

>> What worked this year? What didn’t work?

I was worried about switching platforms from Tumblr to Blogger, but I think it worked out. Tumblr is a microblogging platform, but it’s really not at all like blogging. It targets a very particular audience with a very particular aesthetic; most just look for pretty pictures and clever text posts. Of course, there is so much of Tumblr that I appreciate, such as the high community engagement via likes and reblogs, but many people won’t read anything over four lines. When I first switched from microblogging to blogging on Tumblr, people asked me wow, what is this for? what blog style is this?–so foreign was the idea of lifestyle blogging. Thus, I relied heavily on Bloglovin’. Ever since I switched platforms, I have seen an increase in comments, and for that I thank you, not so much for the volume of comments, but for the fact that you have taken time out of your day to humor my little space on the Internet when you could be doing anything else. Another thing I noticed is that I am now much more thoughtful before pushing the “publish” button. I don’t know if this is a benefit or a detriment. On one hand, I like to think that the quality of my posts have improved, but on the other hand, I take so damn long to write them up!

I am very interested to hear what you think has worked well this year on Brunch at Audrey’s and what hasn’t! I’m a big girl now; I can handle it! Leave your opinions in the comments below or contact me directly if you’re more comfortable with that. You guys are my inspiration and my motivation <3

>> Current stats & 2015 stat goals

I am a person who cares way too much about stats and I don’t want to anymore. I used to count the ratio between photos I posted on Facebook and photos I was tagged in. I used to clear my Doodle Jump scoreboard after every bad run in order to maintain a high average. I used to refresh my Instagram every 30 seconds for ten minutes after I posted a new photo. Okay, I still do that last one.

Anyways, you get my point. It’s ridiculous how stats can send me flying high and crashing down. However, I do recognize that an acknowledgement of stats is helpful to a certain extent. I have quite a few social media links, but I’m going to choose to focus on Bloglovin’ and Facebook, the main platforms with which I hope to reach my audience. Right now they’re both at about 80, and by the end of 2015 I hope to get them to 150 and 125 respectively, or 200 for Bloglovin’ if I’m feeling ambitious.

You might find these numbers low, but I think that this is a healthy goal for me. The idea is that the goal is easy enough to achieve that I won’t be obsessing over gaining followers, but challenging enough to encourage improvement, because I’d much rather have a smaller but more engaged readership than a larger but more passive one. Also, I’m more interested in working with the readership I already have than in reeling in people who might not be so keen about this space.

>> What community goals do you have? Describe the community you’d like to build on your blog in 2015. How many comments will you receive? Will you have blogger friends? Will you be connected to your readers? Describe anything that relates to your ideal community.

There are so many amazing blogs and bloggers out there that, in my opinion, have really made it. The blogging industry is a young one that is slowly growing, and believe it or not, some people make their whole living off of it. (I can only dream to be at that stage one day.) When you first start blogging, it’s natural to want to reach a large audience, to want to exert an influence as significant as that of the more established and more popular blogs you follow. Until then, I like to think that the golden time is when you first start off as a small blogger. I’m sure everyone hopes that their blog will take off and maybe even earn a little money from it, or at the very least they want to find an audience that cares about their little place on the Internet. You blog for yourself, but it’s nice to have some support along the way. However, being able to experiment, to do what you want to do, to write about what you want to write (no matter how irrelevant or trivial), to create or find your authentic self, is one of the greatest things to discover and cherish when you first start off! With this golden time I want to build trust with my readership. I want you to get to know me better, and I want to get to know you better as well.

I’m not interested in having a certain number of comments per post. What I want to achieve is perfectly illustrated by this quote from You’ve Got Mail: “I like to start my notes to you as if we’re already in the middle of a conversation. I pretend that we’re the oldest and dearest friends — as opposed to what we actually are, people who don’t know each other’s names.” As implied by the definition of a conversation, the dynamic I want to have here is one where people aren’t afraid to are passionate about exchanging ideas. I did not start this blog to enlighten the world with my great knowledge, though if I had any I’d be more than happy to share it with you. I want us to bring forth our various perspectives not to agree upon a conclusion but to contribute to conversation and to encourage open-ended-ness.

And as for blogger friends? Yes, yes, yes! I can’t imagine anyone being afraid to approach me, because in fact, more often than not, I’m the one who’s thinking, “wow wow wow. you’re so cool. why can’t i be cool like you. please be friends with me. teach me how to be cool. let me have the honor of being your friend. i volunteer. take me.” Don’t be a stranger! Message me on Tumblr* and introduce yourself.

*If you have some personal vendetta against Tumblr or would just simply prefer to contact me some other way, leave it in the comments or check out my contact form. I just thought that Tumblr message would be a little more personal/private, but whatever floats your boat!

>> How much money will you make from blogging? How will you do it?

Zero, zip, zilch, nada. First of all, I want to put my energy into growing my blog rather than dragging in sponsors or advertisers. Second of all, how much I earn will just become another stat to unhealthily obsess over. Third of all, I don’t want to ruin the integrity of my blog. Of course, there are many honest, for profit blogs out there, but I don’t want to put myself in the face of temptation. I guess I’m worried about how money will affect the relationship between not only me and my readers but also that of me and my blog. That being said, you might now be wondering about the links under “shop” in my sidebar. Head on over to the Getting Started page to find out more about that!

>> How will you enhance the design + organization of your blog? What does your ideal blog look like? Any special features?

I don’t know, you tell me. I wish I could say that I had enough vision to create a brand for Brunch at Audrey’s, but alas, that is not the case. I see one thing and I fall in love with it. I see another thing and I fall in love with that too. My indecision is evident by the number of Tumblr microblogs I have (a wildly inappropriate humor one, an aesthetically angsty personal one, an inspirationally adventurous nature one, and a beautifully dreamy vintage one). For now, I’ll just share a list of my favorite blog layouts:

  • Thou Swell, Peony Lim, No. 21, Paris In Four Months, Stay Bookish, Wish, Wish, Wish
  • A House In The Hills, The Veda House, Oh So Pretty, The Londoner, Katelyn Brooke

I’m not ready to spend money on blog design, so I guess I’ll just continually search for inspiration (Bloglovin’ is my friend), figure out what exactly I like so much about these blog layouts, and then see what works for me. My options may be limited by my inability to code, but baby steps, baby steps.

>> What do you love about blogging? How can you add even more of that to your blog in 2015?

The influence of blogging doesn’t stop at my screen. There’s a fine line between living to blog and blogging while living, and while I haven’t yet defined that boundary, I truly believe that even just the process of finding balance has added to the quality of my life. I try to find “bloggable” moments in everything I do; sometimes I’ll go and do something just for the possibility of blogging about it.

Blogging has motivated me to take a few risks, do more things out of my comfort zone, and, well, just do more things in general haha. It has encouraged me to find inspiration from my daily life. Although blogging hasn’t led me to creating anything tangible (i.e. DIY projects… but it’s never too late for that!), I have definitely created many memories, and I hope to create more! With you!

I cannot emphasize enough that I draw my inspiration not only from the blogs I follow, but also from you guys. I love the community engagement in the blogosphere. I’ve been trying my best to reply to all the comments you leave on my blog and have also been checking up with you guys on your blogs and leaving comments myself. In 2015, I hope to expand my engagement by learning how to use social media instead of making you guys wait for my posts to come up. Teach me how to Twitter.

At the end of the year I hope to have many things to look back on. I was actually hoping to end this year on Brunch at Audrey’s with a roundup of my favorite moments, but many of my posts are still over on my old blog. I wanted to transfer the old posts to here, but my blog has evolved and some of those old posts are–hmm how do I put this–various in quality. A Beautiful Mess does a wonderful job of rounding up their highlights. Maybe once I accumulate a substantial amount of memories of my own I can organize my highlights into a timeline on my about page like this.

>> What do you dislike about blogging? How can you minimize that? For example, creating email templates so you’re not always typing out responses to the same kinds of emails.

Demoralized by blogging without substance. Exasperated by “deep” posts that try too hard. Guilty of all of the above. Not a fan of spam or negativity. Frustrated when people say “anyone can blog.” These are all things that nag me that I want to bring to light. But enough of that. The best way to improve is to reflect upon yourself instead of ranting about others. Because ranting is annoying too. I don’t like how I take so long coming up with ideas and drafting them, so I’m going to start planning posts but also keeping in mind to not become too formulaic. This is the planner I’m currently using and I’m obsessed with it (you can get it on sale here!). It’s a hearty size and is filled with beautiful colors and patterns, which I think is key in motivating me to actually accomplish all the tasks I write in there. I’ve been using it solely for academics, but there’s enough space to plan my blogging in there too.

>> Dream big! List three big blogging goals for 2015.

1 // BE CONSISTENT, 1-2 posts a week. Maybe I’ll even try a 52 project challenge.

2 // DO A COLLAB. That’s a sure sign of community engagement, is it not?

3 // ESTABLISH A BRAND, visually. (name, logo, color, tagline, fonts, tone, etc.)

I tried my best to be as specific as possible with my goals, though that last one is a little more broad. It’s also the goal I foresee to be the most difficult to achieve, but also the most rewarding to achieve. The more general and unquantifiable goals I have are to improve my photography, to spend less time drafting blog posts without sacrificing quality, to learn how to strategically utilize social media, to be more engaged in the blogosphere, to comment with purpose, and to work on graphic design.

What are your 2015 blogging goals? Feel free to leave them in the comments below or make your own post and send me the link to check it out! I’m constantly looking for inspiration from fellow bloggers 🙂 Also, just in case you were skimming this post and missed it, it would be so helpful if you could leave a comment below with what you think worked this year on Brunch at Audrey’s and what didn’t.

Thanks for sticking with me! May 2015 be an awesome year for all of us!
